Aural Rehabilitation for Recent Cochlear Implant Recipients
Aural Rehabilitation is for recent cochlear implant recipients, who already have established spoken language skills.
One of the most important steps in the Cochlear Implant process is participating in an Aural Rehabilitation Program following the initial activation. Research studies show that patients adjust to the cochlear implant more quickly and achieve greater overall success because of the Aural Rehabilitation program. In the Aural Rehabilitation Program, you will complete listening exercises with a licensed Listening and Spoken Language Specialist to help teach your brain how to listen and understand with the Cochlear Implant. Each Aural Rehabilitation session is tailored to your personal needs and goals but you can expect to include some or all of the following components: • Counseling and Guidance • Auditory Training • Communication skills training • Conversational techniques • Coping Mechanisms • Speech reading • Practice/training with your assistive listening devices • Rhythm - Timing • Information on the auditory system and hearing loss |
Aural Rehabilitation Testimonial:
“You have made it so easy and "idiot proof" with your setup and pleasant setting. Your patience with my less-than-high-tech sophistication lessened any stress and your relationship with my Audiologist, added a sense of community versus separate entities... So a big thank you to you all! Dottie, my wife, found your creative exercises, the wealth of materials and your modeling of teaching/empowering extremely valuable for her as she worked with her challenging subject (me!). While we thank you, please hear the appreciation for the comfortable relationship and assistance with related questions we both felt comfortable in asking! We also found the Zoom connection to be excellent and hearing seldom became a problem. Although professional and obviously very skilled, your easy way of guiding the sessions created a climate less clinical and more reflective of a common agenda we all three shared.”

"Teletherapy has become my lifeline during the pandemic. Spending an hour engaging in fun listening exercises with my auditory therapist has kept me accountable to adapting to my cochlear implant while people social distance and wear masks. I’m happy to report I’ve made great progress with my cochlear implant thanks to my teletherapy sessions.
Even under normal circumstances, I would still highly recommend teletherapy for anyone who has a busy schedule, lives at a distance, or has any other reasons that a in-person visit might be difficult. As a time saver, it’s a huge perk to be able to pop into a session during my lunch hour at work for a “brain break”!"
