Caitlin is 19 years old and is a freshman this year at Georgia Tech. Caitlin was born profoundly deaf and received a cochlear implant at age 4. She plays the trumpet and was section leader in her marching band in high school. Caitlin is majoring in bio-medical engineering and hopes to one day work with cochlear implant technology.
Christopher is a 15 year old sophomore at Parkview High School. He was born with a profound, bilateral hearing loss and received a cochlear implant at 24 months. He graduated from the Auditory-Verbal Center at the age of 7 and has always been enrolled in regular education classes. He is an honors student and a member of the Beta Club. Christopher enjoys playing basketball, baseball, tennis and mountain biking. He is active in his church youth group and in June 2008 went with the group to the island of Eleuthera where he helped with construction on a home in the Haitian village and kid’s camp ministry.
Jessica graduated from AVC at age 6 in 2001. Jessica is 13 and is in the 7th grade at High Meadows School. In May, 1996, she was the youngest child in the U.S. at the time to receive a CI at age 15 months. She was bilaterally implanted in 2004. Jessica is a Cadette Girl Scout and has logged over 50 hours of community service both with and aside from the Girl Scouts. She loves animals, reading, including Shakespeare, and writing. Jonathan was born profoundly deaf and wore bilateral hearing aids starting at the age of 6 weeks old. He was then implanted at the age of 5 with the Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant. He is now 18 years old and a senior at Riverside Military Academy and holds the position of Lieutenant and is an active member of the Armed Exhibition Drill Team and Color Guard. He plans on attending North Georgia College and State University and enrolling in the Cadet program while working toward a Business leadership Major and marketing minor.
Rachel graduated from AVC at age 10 in 1997. She was one of the first 200 children in the U.S. to receive a cochlear implant as part of the phase III FDA clinical trials in 1989 and was bilaterally implanted in 2004. She is now 21 and is a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) majoring in photography, with a focus on travel photojournalism and is also the Features Editor for the SCAD newspaper. Rachel’s school paper won a national journalism award, as well as she personally won a statewide journalism award. She is fluent in French, is currently visiting France for the 6th time. Samantha graduated from AVC at age 7 and has worn hearing aids most of her life. She received a cochlear implant at the age of 16 after her hearing worsened. Samantha has been enrolled in regular classrooms her whole life and is a 2008 graduate from Lakeside High School. She is currently attending Berry College in Rome, Georgia working towards a Business Major with a graphic design minor. While attending college she is working in the Alumni Office answering the phones and setting up for events. She enjoys swing dancing, listening to music on her iPod and volunteering in community service projects.
