Georgia Auditory-Verbal Services

Families who live within a reasonable driving distance of AVC attend a one-hour Auditory-Verbal session once a week. Each session includes the therapist, at least one parent, and the child and is individualized for each child to meet his or her unique needs. The session serves several purposes. First, the therapist introduces the child to new language and cognitive concepts or reviews and expands upon ones taught previously. The session also serves as a diagnostic time for the therapist who can then tailor the following week’s session accordingly.

Of at least as much importance as teaching the child, though, is educating the parents so that they have the knowledge and skills to follow through at home both in formal daily lessons of approximately an hour and informally, through using everyday situations to foster their child’s language development. The therapist provides the parents with numerous creative ideas and suggestions for follow-through in the home environment.

Children attend AVC once a week beginning as soon as possible after their hearing loss is diagnosed so that they can minimize delays in their language and speech. With early diagnosis, early amplification or cochlear implantation and early intervention, many of our children have age appropriate language by kindergarten.
