Eight Week Practicum The Auditory-Verbal Practicum Site at the Auditory-Verbal Center offers graduate student interns an opportunity to gain university credit and clinical clock hours toward graduation in a totally Auditory-Verbal clinical setting. Those students wishing to specialize in providing Auditory-Verbal services will find the experience most beneficial. Practicum experiences are planned in conjunction with the student’s university and are typically eight weeks in length. Goals and guidelines follow those delineated in the contract between the Center and the student’s university. During the eight weeks, students maintain an eight hour schedule daily at the Center. Students will gain hands-on experience in working with children between the ages of birth to seven. Students also have the opportunity to go offsite to observe mappings for children with cochlear implants and related therapies, such as sensory integration therapy or oral motor therapy. Students participate in every aspect of an Auditory-Verbal therapist’s job while at the Center, which includes but is not limited to writing lesson plans, parent training, sanitizing toys, gathering materials and putting them away, consulting with audiologists, round table clinical discussions, evaluations, the scoring of test instruments, and report writing. Students are given an outline and bibliographies with suggested readings to use in their training and will observe all the therapists at the Center in diagnostic and therapeutic sessions
