The
Auditory-Verbal Center (AVC) is a nonprofit center in
Atlanta that teaches children who are mildly hearing impaired to
profoundly deaf to listen and speak so that they can succeed in
mainstream schools and experience lives without limitation. Founded in
1977, it is one of only two such centers in the United States. Most of AVC’s child clients, ages five and older, upon completion of
Auditory-Verbal therapy, can attend regular schools with no additional
resources or help. This is not a common practice in deaf education but
affords these children the opportunity to develop and mature with their
social peers. It also represents an enormous savings in taxpayer
dollars.Since its
beginnings in a room above a church, the AVC has grown with Certified
Auditory-Verbal therapists including licensed speech language
pathologists. AVC has its own an audiology department, staffed by licensed
Audiologists providing a
complete scope of services to children and adults, including Auditory
Processing Disorder (APD)
evaluations. The AVC has the only Assistive Listening
Devices (ALD) Center in Georgia, has expanded to include a
satellite center in Macon and has requests for additional satellite
centers in at least five other Georgia locations where Auditory-Verbal is not
currently available. In addition, AVC includes the only Immersion
Center in the world. The Immersion Center provides 3 – 5 day intensive
Auditory-Verbal family training programs for families who live too far
to attend weekly or for international families who would not otherwise
have access to Auditory-Verbal therapy. The AVC
serves as a practicum site for the training of Auditory-Verbal
therapists who are currently in graduate programs, as well as a
mentoring site for professionals preparing for Auditory-Verbal certification.
Additional professional services include one week intensive training
experiences for professionals interested in incorporating an
understanding of the Auditory-Verbal approach into their work, as well as
complementary professional days for those interested in simply becoming
more familiar with the Auditory-Verbal approach.
